Mode of action
- An azalide, a subclass of macrolide antibiotic
- More potent against certain bacterial species than erythromycin
- Prevents bacteria from growing by interfering with their protein synthesis. It binds to the 50S subunit of the bacterial ribosome, and thus inhibits translation of mRNA.
- Has broad spectrum. It inhibits some Gram-(+) bacteria, some Gram-(-) bacteria, and many atypical bacteria
- Has widespread popularity arises primarily from its slow elimination from the body, which allows many infections to be treated with 3-5 days of once-daily administration, compared to 3-4 times a day for up to 2 weeks for erythromycin

- Adult: 500 mg once daily for 3 days. Alternatively, 500 mg as a single dose on the 1st day followed by 250 mg once daily for 4 days.
- Child: >6 month: 10 mg/kg; 15-25 kg: 200 mg; 26-35 kg: 300 mg; 36-45 kg: 400 mg. Doses to be taken once daily for 3 days
