Mode of action
- A third generation & a broad spectrum cephalosporin antibiotic
- Stops bacteria from multiplication. Its bactericidal action is due to the inhibition of cell wall synthesis
- Highly stable in the presence of beta- lactamase enzymes. As a result, many organisms resistant to penicillins and some cephalosporins due to the presence of beta-lactamases, may be susceptible to cefixime.

Indication
- Uncomplicated urinary tract infections
- Otitis media
- Pharyngitis and tonsillitis
- Acute bronchitis and acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis
- Uncomplicated gonorrhea (cervical/ urethral)

Dose
Otitis media, pharyngitis, tonsillitis, acute bronchitis, acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis, UTI

- Adult: 200-400 mg/day as a single dose or in 2 divided doses.
- Child: 8 mg/kg/day as a single dose or in 2 divided doses; <6 month: Not recommended.
- Treatment should be continued for 48 hr after disappearance of symptoms.
- Renal impairment: Dose reduction is necessary.
