Mode of action
- A proton pump inhibitor (PPI)
- Act by irreversibly blocking the hydrogen/potassium adenosine triphosphatase enzyme system (the H+/K+ ATPase) of the gastric parietal cells, which is the terminal step in acid production
- Significantly more effective than H2 antagonists
- Used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), a condition that causes gastric juices to flow upward from the stomach and into the esophagus
- Also treats conditions in which the stomach makes excess acid, including Zollinger-Ellison syndrome

Indication
- Reflux Esophagitis: 40mg OD for 4-8weeks
- GERD or heartburn: 40mg OD for 4-8weeks
- Duodenal (intestinal) ulcers: 40mg OD
- Gastric (stomach) ulcers: 40mg OD for 4-8wks
- pylori infection: 40mg BD for 7 days
- Zollinger-Ellison syndrome: 40mg BD
- Stomach ulcers associated with NSAID use: 20mg OD
