Mode of action
It is a biguamide derivative, works by suppressing the hepatic gluconeonesis and glucose output from the liver, and inhibits intestinal absorption of glucose, other hexose and amino acid. Thus results reduction in blood glucose level.

Precaution
Patient with CHF or heart failure, hypersensitivity, renal impairment, elderly, discontinued the treatment in patient with stress related states e.g. fever, trauma, infection or surgery

Dose
Type 2 DM,
Adult: Initially 500mg bid or tid or 850mg 1-2 times daily. Max dose 2.25g daily
Child: ≥10 year initially 500mg or 850mg once daily, increased dose either weekly by 850mg daily to a maintenance dose to 1500-2000mg daily in 2 0r 3 divided dose. Max dose 2000mg daily.Polycystic ovarian syndrome
Adult: Initially 500mg daily in the morning for 1 week, the 500mg bid for 1 week, then 1.5-1.7g daily in 2-3 divided doses.
